Allie's Version:
We met at a play...
In September of 2012, our mutual friends introduced us during intermission at a production of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' at the Buskirk Chumley. After whiskey at the Vid, we spent the rest of the night laughing and awkwardly nodding next to each other during a Red Hot Chili Pepper cover band performance at the Bluebird, me trying to pretend I knew way more about the band than I did, and James critiquing the guitar but loving the bass slapping going on. The next week our friends told him that I wanted to meet up for a Bad Movie Night with a group, and told me that he wanted to meet up for a Bad Movie night with a group, so we did that Friday. To end the Bad Movie evening, we had the most stereotypical rom-com Karaoke night ever, where I tore the house down with an interesting rendition of 'Don't Stop Believing', featuring stage direction by James. Through long work days, job changes, music, old man puppy adoption, crafts, travel, business ventures, too much food, and unyielding support, we've been inseparable ever since.
James' Version:
I got dragged to a play...
But it actually wasn't that bad. I think. I don't actually remember the play. What I do remember is meeting a girl and then being yelled at by that girl for not knowing what Hedwig and the Angry Inch was. It's a musical (surprise). Over the next five years we found plenty of other things to disagree on, like her horrible taste in beer and her tendency to fight strangers while drinking said beer, but I've also found a partner who has supported me 100% in every venture I've embarked on no matter how crazy, scary, nerdy or downright stupid it may have been. I wouldn't be where I am today without her and can't even imagine where we'll be in the next five years but I know wherever we are she'll be by my side with all the love, planning, humor, unfailing support, over-planning, and positive outlook I've come to depend on.
Also, if she asks you about Hedwig, just smile and nod. It'll be over faster that way.
